Confession Brings Freedom

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." I John I:9

My family has a history, and perhaps yours does too. From abuse, to lying, to drugs and immorality … there has been such brokenness that has cost generations. Our past is dark.

However, I know that when we start bringing these things to God and hiding them no more, He will do something amazing.

God starts to heal things when we begin confessing.

Confession is admitting that I’m broken, and, for the Christian, being specific on how I am broken. I think we miss seeing God’s healing in our lives because we’re not willing to be specific when we do wrong.

Example: “God, forgive us our sins,” vs. “God, forgive me for where I am proud. Lord, I don’t speak to my spouse/kids in the right way. Would you guard my mouth?”

Confession is not saying, “I’m sorry,” only. It’s proactive about taking steps to make the situation right if possible. For example, if I stole money from my sister, true confession would include being willing to restore that which I’ve stolen.

Jesus Himself said that if your brother had a problem with you, to stop giving gifts to God and go make your relationship right with your brother first. God’s more interested in relationships than He is in your money or gifts. He’s all about relationships. That’s the whole purpose of confessing to God—so you and God can have fellowship again, not because He merely wants you to feel guilty.

When you’re truly willing to admit whatever God brings to mind, He gives you the power to overcome it. Jesus doesn’t just save us from the consequences of sin; He saves us from sin itself. (Matt. 1:21).

Our future is as bright as the promises of God. He can forgive and cleanse us from our sin. So while our beginning might not have been great, thanks be to God who can and will redeem the ending of those who seek Him.

We don’t have to be slaves to our sin; we can be free, if we confess.
