With the rush of the holiday season upon us and with all the preparations that come with it - finding the right gifts, worrying about expenses, planning/attending Christmas parties, traveling, etc... how does one actually celebrate Christ? What are some practical ways to remember why we even celebrate this season at all?
Christmas can be a difficult time of year for some. We may miss the fun of it while experiencing nostalgic sentiments of an easier, care-free season having passed us by. Or, as life changes, we may miss family members and friends who are no longer here or near. And at times, if we're honest, Christmas just seems a bit too commercialized.
So in order to keep the reason for the season, we need to be intentional and make time to celebrate Christ. One of the good things about this time of year is that there are great devotionals that focus on Advent and the Christmas season. Spend some time online finding one or two of them that you will enjoy either for yourself and/or your family.
You may also want to consider looking up some Christmas Hymns/carols that will help you to keep perspective - those that focus on the true meaning of Christmas, as you seek to celebrate Christ. It can be a spiritually enriching experience to connect with Christ in worship through songs that have not only endured the test of time, but that God can use to minister deeply to our hearts and our souls; for example:
"O come, O come, Immanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear."
Then take some time to enjoy the holiday festivities - look for things to do that are oriented around the holiday season, whether it be a show or a play, a live nativity, finding neighborhoods/communities that have many homes which are well-decorated, etc.
Being intentional about finding things to do over the next few weeks that are not only entertaining, but inspiring, will help you to make it a point to celebrate Christ.
Lastly, take some time to pray throughout the Advent season. Ask God to help you keep your eyes on Him and find the joy, peace, hope and love that He intends for us to unwrap as we look forward to this most special time of year. Enjoy!... And Merry Christmas!
